Getting Lyrical: PICKIN’ FIELDS

I should be working nine to five

That’s what my mama told me

Make sure there’s always work in the field you pick

Writing is just a hobby

Grandma said, “don’t lobby for the role of starving artist”

I should be working nine to five

Creativity won’t pay your bills

“it would kill me to see you struggle”, they say

Make sure there’s always work in the field you pick

“Why not become a nurse?” Mama said

Grandma says work for the City like I did

I should be working nine to five

Well they survived watching me struggle,

to put down my pen

My art ain’t meant for nine to five

And there’s always work in the field I pick
